Alexia Jones Helsley is a Senior Instructor in History and serves as University Archivist for USC Aiken. She teaches South Carolina, Medieval and Public History. Prior to joining USCA, Helsley worked as an archivist for the SC Department of Archives and History.
The author of several books on South Carolina and regional history including, A Guide to Historic Henderson County, A History of North Carolina Wine: from Scuppernong to Syrah, and The Lost History of Aiken County, Helsley is also a contributor to South Carolina Women: their Lives and Times, the South Carolina Encyclopedia, and Our Prince of Scribes: Writers Remember Pat Conroy. Her research on Dr. Daniel L. Smith and the Saluda Baby hospitals is a requested chapter in Recovering the Piedmont Past, II.
A recipient of the SC Governor’s Archives Award, Helsley graduated from Furman University magna cum laude, earned a MA in history from the University of South Carolina in Columbia, is past president of SC Historical Association, president of the Pace Society of America, and currently chairs the SC Old Exchange Commission.
